Power of Tuesday Summary

September 2, 2010

July 26, 2010

Note: This document reflects the opinions of those who attended these Webinars and submitted comments.  The ideas are not necessarily representative of the official positions of our libraries. This is a place to start the conversation.

The below list is not an exhaustive summary of the Power of Tuesday Webinar series, but rather a listing of salient points.  There are 5 additional summaries and all the data is available at http://powerofsunylibraries.pbworks.com.

Overarching Concerns

  • It is clear, from the comments that we need to completely rethink the way libraries will work going forward instead of tweaking that which is already in place.
  • We are three different types of institutions trying to work as a system.  It will be important that the Power of SUNY Libraries encompass all levels without focusing on any one type of institution.
  • Campuses show that there are clear benefits to working together as a system.

Coordinated Collection Development Opportunities

  • Expanded online coordinated collection development & purchasing (via SUNYConnect and WALDO)
  • Coordinated e-book purchasing, with focus on DRM-free content (8)
  • Coordinated regional storage (4)
  • Streaming audio
  • Core set of research (electronic) resources available to all students at all campuses, with an emphasis on undergraduates.

Electronic Resources

  • Parallel coordinated collection development outcomes
  • Reduce duplication of efforts – several campuses are purchasing the same databases without negotiating as a system
  • Develop a single SUNY sign-on for One SUNY E-Resource Collection
  • Create sector-based packages for each group: basic, expanded, premium, medical, etc.
  • Consider a method for coalitions of the willing to bargain as a group
  • Consider open-access alternatives and saying “no” to expensive publishers
  • Incorporate e-books, AV, purchase-on-demand books
  • Increase communication

Future of the Academic Librarian

  • Outline / Support / Require Professional Development Opportunities
  • Identify Staffing Goals for libraries / Task Force for standards of new skill sets / Focus on developing a list of skills for specific subject areas (like MAGERT)
  • Identify metrics for return on investment, impact on learning outcomes
  • Provide guidance to upper administrators on the changing role of librarians in higher education.
  • Standardized measurement goals
  • Development of best practices / community standards
  • Collaborations:
    • Framework for campus collaboration to promote PD
    • Share subject specialist librarians
    • SUNY-wide mentor services
  • Look for ways to not only develop new skills but to sustain and implement new programs or technologies that the new skills fit.
  • “Strategic vision should not proscribe any particular tactics nor skill sets necessary to execute them.”
  • “Recognize that the changes in technology will outpace the time frame of the plan”
  • “The new demographic breakdown identified in the strategic plan suggests that more demographic study of how different age groups consume information would be helpful.  As well as some studies on the type of information different age ranges require for their endeavors.”

Working Group on Library Access

Top Priorities (based on ranking by B. Grimes):

  • Open Doors to Knowledge
  • Reinvent the SUNY Library System (some gave this lower priority because they believe it’s already being done)
  • Library Partner Initiative
  • Information Management and Critical Thinking Initiative
  • Business Information Resource Centers

Cataloging & Digital Initiatives

  • Digitization for repositories
  • Copyright and digital right management
  • Sharing of expertise in instruction (shared research guides or libguides)
  • Shared electronic tools (ex. training student workers on Aleph circulation system using ANGEL)
  • Sharing code for projects from one library to another (ex. making the library present in all courses in ANGEL)

Power of Tuesday Follow Up

July 9, 2010

Thank you for your participation in the Power of Tuesday Webinar Series. Please know that you can access the archived Webinars from the SUNY Librarians Association (SUNYLA) Website if you would like to view any that you missed. Click on http://www.sunyla.org/Power-of-Tuesday/schedule

Next Steps will include:
• Compiling your responses to the polls and strategic questions. Representatives from the SUNYConnect Advisory Council (SAC), SUNY Librarians Association (SUNYLA) and the SUNY Council of Library Directors (SCLD) under Logan Rath’s (Brockport/SUNYLA Past President) leadership will work with the raw data and create a report for us.
• Planning documents are available on this blog.
• SUNY library directors will meet in Corning on September 29th with a facilitator to establish strategic directions.
• On the 30th the directors will meet with their respective sectors to do more work.
• After that they will return to their constituencies and get feedback and share that feedback with the SCLD Executive Board by November. On this Executive Board there is SAC (Andrew White of Stony Brook/Chair of SAC) and SUNYLA (Angela Weiler of Onondaga Community College/President of SUNYLA) representation.
• Finally, Maryruth Glogowski (Buffalo State College/Chair of SCLD) has volunteered to draft the strategic plan with a group of Readers: Cristina Pope (SUNY Upstate Medical Center/SAC rep) and a person from SUNYLA to be named by August 5th. We will be working closely with Mary Donohue, the SCLD Vice Chair/Chair Elect.
• Polls indicate that library staff would like an update Webinar in December, and that will be scheduled.
• It is expected that The Power of SUNY Libraries will be ready in January.

The Power of SUNY Libraries

June 16, 2010

This year the work of the SUNY Council of Library Directors will focus on developing a strategic plan – The Power of SUNY Libraries. Planning documents will be shared through this site.

“Tuesdays with Maureen” Webinars Set for June

May 24, 2010

Okay, these webinars are actually entitled The Power of Tuesday.  The alternative title is simply a tongue-in-cheek reference to the ever-popular Tuesdays with Morrie and an homage to SUNYConnect Project Manager Maureen Zajkowski. :-)

The hour-long Power of Tuesday webinars, to be delivered via Elluminate at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in June, will explore the future directions of SUNY libraries as we plan our system-wide strategic directions for the next five years.

The topics (and facilitators) for the five webinars are:

June 1: Creating New SUNY Collaborative Collection Models (Cerise Oberman)
June 8: E-Resources: Beyond SUNYConnect (Randy Gadikian)
June 15: The Future of the Academic Librarian (Colleen Lougen & Logan Rath)
June 22: SUNY Libraries as Community Partners (Maureen Zajkowski)
June 29: Capitalizing on Expertise Across SUNY: Cataloging & Digital Initiatives (John Meador)

Please encourage your staff to attend! For more information visit the SUNYLA Web site.

Nylink To Close Its Doors in a Year

May 18, 2010

Many of us just learned the sad news that Nylink, which has served New York State libraries for 37 years, will dissolve itself in 12 months.  You can read the details from the Nylink press release and its Closure FAQ.

On a much lighter note, I’ve replaced the “cat’s eyes” header with SCLD’s official logo.  It’s much more professional, though it may not have quite the same panache.

Opening the SCLD Web Site

April 16, 2010

In conjuction with SCLD’s spring conference “Opening the Library” on April 19th and 20th in Saratoga Springs, we’re also “opening the SCLD Web site!” What has changed, you ask?

1) SCLD directors are now be able to post their own blog topics and entries.
2) SCLD section conveners will be able to create and manage their own SCLD section pages.
3) The Web site’s look has been freshened up a bit, but the same Council documents are available.

Although his blue eyes may not grace this Web site indefinitely, the header image above is courtesy of my cat Chaucer. I can’t decide whether the image works as a visual pun on the “vision” concept in our mission statement, or if it simply looks like a feline Big Brother looking back at us.

So, what do you think of the new site? Feel free to leave me a comment below if you think the site is an improvement (or not) from our old SCLD Web page.
