Power of Tuesday Follow Up

July 9, 2010

Thank you for your participation in the Power of Tuesday Webinar Series. Please know that you can access the archived Webinars from the SUNY Librarians Association (SUNYLA) Website if you would like to view any that you missed. Click on http://www.sunyla.org/Power-of-Tuesday/schedule

Next Steps will include:
• Compiling your responses to the polls and strategic questions. Representatives from the SUNYConnect Advisory Council (SAC), SUNY Librarians Association (SUNYLA) and the SUNY Council of Library Directors (SCLD) under Logan Rath’s (Brockport/SUNYLA Past President) leadership will work with the raw data and create a report for us.
• Planning documents are available on this blog.
• SUNY library directors will meet in Corning on September 29th with a facilitator to establish strategic directions.
• On the 30th the directors will meet with their respective sectors to do more work.
• After that they will return to their constituencies and get feedback and share that feedback with the SCLD Executive Board by November. On this Executive Board there is SAC (Andrew White of Stony Brook/Chair of SAC) and SUNYLA (Angela Weiler of Onondaga Community College/President of SUNYLA) representation.
• Finally, Maryruth Glogowski (Buffalo State College/Chair of SCLD) has volunteered to draft the strategic plan with a group of Readers: Cristina Pope (SUNY Upstate Medical Center/SAC rep) and a person from SUNYLA to be named by August 5th. We will be working closely with Mary Donohue, the SCLD Vice Chair/Chair Elect.
• Polls indicate that library staff would like an update Webinar in December, and that will be scheduled.
• It is expected that The Power of SUNY Libraries will be ready in January.

“Tuesdays with Maureen” Webinars Set for June

May 24, 2010

Okay, these webinars are actually entitled The Power of Tuesday.  The alternative title is simply a tongue-in-cheek reference to the ever-popular Tuesdays with Morrie and an homage to SUNYConnect Project Manager Maureen Zajkowski. :-)

The hour-long Power of Tuesday webinars, to be delivered via Elluminate at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in June, will explore the future directions of SUNY libraries as we plan our system-wide strategic directions for the next five years.

The topics (and facilitators) for the five webinars are:

June 1: Creating New SUNY Collaborative Collection Models (Cerise Oberman)
June 8: E-Resources: Beyond SUNYConnect (Randy Gadikian)
June 15: The Future of the Academic Librarian (Colleen Lougen & Logan Rath)
June 22: SUNY Libraries as Community Partners (Maureen Zajkowski)
June 29: Capitalizing on Expertise Across SUNY: Cataloging & Digital Initiatives (John Meador)

Please encourage your staff to attend! For more information visit the SUNYLA Web site.

Nylink To Close Its Doors in a Year

May 18, 2010

Many of us just learned the sad news that Nylink, which has served New York State libraries for 37 years, will dissolve itself in 12 months.  You can read the details from the Nylink press release and its Closure FAQ.

On a much lighter note, I’ve replaced the “cat’s eyes” header with SCLD’s official logo.  It’s much more professional, though it may not have quite the same panache.

Opening the SCLD Web Site

April 16, 2010

In conjuction with SCLD’s spring conference “Opening the Library” on April 19th and 20th in Saratoga Springs, we’re also “opening the SCLD Web site!” What has changed, you ask?

1) SCLD directors are now be able to post their own blog topics and entries.
2) SCLD section conveners will be able to create and manage their own SCLD section pages.
3) The Web site’s look has been freshened up a bit, but the same Council documents are available.

Although his blue eyes may not grace this Web site indefinitely, the header image above is courtesy of my cat Chaucer. I can’t decide whether the image works as a visual pun on the “vision” concept in our mission statement, or if it simply looks like a feline Big Brother looking back at us.

So, what do you think of the new site? Feel free to leave me a comment below if you think the site is an improvement (or not) from our old SCLD Web page.
